Founder, KANIFIT Dance Fitness
Aotearoa/New Zealand born-and-bred Puna has been a community-based dance group fitness instructor since 2010.
Raised with a love for music, dance and storytelling through the vehicle of kapa haka / Māori performing arts, Puna has performed nationally at competitive levels and internationally. She has tutored tribal kapa haka for many years and is inspired by the need for Māori to fall in love with their identity through movement.
Puna’s purpose in the fitness industry is to make way and hold space, particularly for women and youth. Her work as a lawyer and advocate for truth and social justice has seen her build and transform communities.
Puna found a love for dance fitness through Zumba Fitness in 2010. She has been empowered through mentorship from Zumba Education Specialist, Maria Teresa Stone; Zumba Jammer Marlex Pagalunan; and the founder of Salsation, Alejandro Angulo.
Puna has her own dance fitness programme KANIFIT “Wairua-inspired dance fitness” focussing on Latino, World and Aotearoa rhythms. She founded Team Azucar Dance Movement in 2013 a group of dance fitness instructors from Taranaki with a vision to provide empowering, uplifting and affordable dance fitness classes.
